Job Overview
The Chief Safety Officer will be a pivotal leader within our Tanzanian operations, responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety protocols across all onshore and offshore assets. This role is not merely about compliance; it is about fostering a proactive safety culture that permeates every level of the organization. You will be responsible for mitigating risks, managing emergency response strategies, and ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of their shift. This is a high-stakes leadership position that requires a deep understanding of international safety standards and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive corporate safety strategy aligned with global TotalEnergies standards.
- Lead investigations into significant safety incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Conduct regular audits of operational sites to ensure strict adherence to health and safety regulations.
- Collaborate with senior management to integrate safety metrics into overall business performance reviews.
- Oversee the implementation of advanced safety technologies and monitoring systems.
- Provide expert guidance on risk assessment for new energy projects and infrastructure developments.
Required Skills
- Expertise in international HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) management systems.
- Strong leadership and ability to manage large, diverse technical teams.
- Advanced analytical skills for risk assessment and incident investigation.
- Exceptional communication skills for reporting to executive boards and field staff.
- In-depth knowledge of Tanzanian environmental and labor laws.
Education
A Master’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related technical field is mandatory. Professional certifications such as NEBOSH or equivalent international safety credentials are highly preferred.
Experience
Candidates must possess a minimum of 10 years of experience in safety management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role within the oil and gas or heavy industrial sector. Proven experience in managing safety for large-scale energy projects is essential.
