Job Overview
The Marine Conservation Specialist will lead initiatives to monitor and protect Tanzania’s coastal and marine ecosystems. This role involves collaborating with local stakeholders, government agencies, and international partners to implement science-based conservation strategies. The position is based in Mtwara, a key region for marine biodiversity and sustainable development in southern Tanzania.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field surveys to assess marine biodiversity, habitat health, and human impacts.
- Design and implement community-based conservation programs for sustainable fisheries and coastal management.
- Collaborate with local authorities to enforce marine protected area regulations and policies.
- Collect, analyze, and report data on marine ecosystem trends to inform conservation strategies.
- Provide technical expertise for climate resilience projects in coastal zones.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in marine conservation, coastal management, or related fields.
- Strong knowledge of Tanzanian marine ecosystems and regulatory frameworks.
- Proficiency in GIS mapping and environmental data analysis tools.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to work in remote field conditions and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline. Advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) are a plus.
Experience
3-5 years of professional experience in marine conservation, preferably in East Africa. Experience with community-based natural resource management is highly desirable.
Salary
3,000,000 – 4,500,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience.
