Job Overview

The Urban Agriculture Systems Designer will lead the development of innovative urban farming solutions tailored to Songea’s unique environmental and socio-economic context. This role combines technical expertise in agricultural engineering with urban planning principles to create scalable models for food production in peri-urban areas. The position is part of CIMMYT’s broader initiative to integrate agriculture into urban development frameworks across Tanzania.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement urban agriculture systems that optimize space, water, and resource efficiency
• Conduct feasibility studies for vertical farming, rooftop gardens, and hydroponic systems in urban settings
• Collaborate with municipal authorities to align projects with local zoning and sustainability policies
• Train community stakeholders in sustainable urban farming techniques and maintenance practices
• Monitor and evaluate the environmental and economic impact of implemented systems

Required Skills

• Proven experience in urban agriculture project design and implementation
• Proficiency in CAD software for agricultural infrastructure modeling
• Strong understanding of water conservation and soil health practices
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and cross-sector collaboration skills
• Fluency in Swahili and English

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or related field
• Master’s Degree preferred but not required

Experience

• 3-5 years of professional experience in urban agriculture, sustainable design, or related fields
• Previous project management experience in East African contexts

Salary

• 3,500,000 – 4,500,000 SSP per annum
